Reef Fish Identification & Level 2 REEF Surveyor

Diving & snorkeling provide us with the opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful and mysterious habitats on earth. You will be surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colorful fish of every shape and description. During this course you will learn to recognize many of the more common species and how to use guidebooks to identify those that you do not know. In addition, you will gain the skill necessary to become a REEF Level 2 surveyor and to conduct roving surveys. If you elect to participate in surveys, the observations you make will contribute to the information needed by scientists to protect coral reef environments.

 

What you will learn . . .

  • To identify 46 of the most commonly sighted fish in Florida, the Bahamas, and Caribbean
  • Recognize 28 common reef fish families
  • Use different texts as reference tools
  • Use an underwater slate for recording sightings
  • Begin a life list of fish sightings
  • How you can take an active role in the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF)
